I took these pictures at the Toys ‘R Us in Henderson, NV. If you can’t tell, the picture on the left is the boys’ section of the store, and the picture on the right is the girls’ section. First, why must there be a boys and girls section at all? Must all toys be coded as masculine or feminine? Second, notice how gender is color-coded. Kids can tell immediately, even before being able to read, which aisle is for them. All this is aside from the content; that is, what toys are sold in each aisle. These are strong and clear messages to children about group differentiation.
On August 23, 2011, Toys "R" Us Inc. announced it would open 21 new stores before year's end, as part of an overall strategy the company has been pursuing since 2006 to house Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us in the same building. The company says the stores provide more shopper convenience. The privately held toy company said this will include 11 "R" Superstores—which have full-size Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores in one location—and 10 stores that will have smaller Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores in the same location. The stores will be in 13 states including Alabama, California, Georgia, New Jersey, and Texas. It is also remodeling 23 existing stores so that the two stores will be in the same location.
Canadian children, with the help and consent of their parents, applied to be the CPO by submitting a video online showing their originality, creativity and enthusiasm for toys. From these entrants, six finalists were brought to for auditions with a panel of judges, where Alex proved he is the right kid for the job.
