So you have decided to buy your kid his first kids microscope. At first you should learn the basic types of such devices. The simplest model is a direct biological microscope (with a single ocular) that is usually utilized at biology lessons in school. Using such tool, a young researcher can easily observe both transparent (with the light passing through an object on the object-plate) and opaque (with the reflected light) objects. The total magnification value of a microscope is equal to objective’s magnification value multiplied by ocular’s magnification value. A microscope with x400-600 magnification is more than enough for the first kids microscope.
A stereomicroscope is also an excellent choice of a kids microscope. A stereomicroscope or a binocular ones has two oculars placed on a certain angle to each other. Such construction provides a stereoscopic image. The magnification value of such microscope is relatively small, up to x100. However, such tool allows to observer almost any object. It doesn’t require powerful light and stresses both eyes equally (that is why stereomicroscopes are better for child’s eyes than monocular microscopes).
Modern kids microscopes feature quality achromatic optics and decent magnification up to x1000 (the magnification is controlled by the revolving head with different objectives).
Among options a kids microscope should have we could emphasize built-in highlighting which allows to send more light to an object and thus to see it in more details.
