  • However, not all of the safety issues with older or antique cribs lie with the manufacturers. CPSC and other crib safety organizations note that parents tend to keep cribs for a long time, or resell them, so they are taken apart and re-assembled several times. Hardware wears out or loosens, pieces go missing, or the crib is put together incorrectly, and all of these things can lead to a crib failure, particularly when it comes to drop-side cribs. When a drop side breaks or loosens, it can create a gap where a baby can become entrapped, so this style of old crib can be particularly dangerous if it's moved and reassembled several times.

The safety of your crib is the most important aspect. While you may be tempted to save a little money by purchasing a secondhand crib, you should be careful before going forward. Vintage or antique cribs may have bars that are too far apart, which could lead to little heads and other body parts getting caught between them. Additionally, cribs made as recently as five or ten years ago may have a drop side. Many of these cribs have been shown to be a hazard, because occasionally the sides will drop without being activated, and baby can get caught or fall out of the crib. Falls even from this height can be dangerous for a newborn.

  • Antique Cribs & Cradles began as a necessity -- not a convenience!

Research indicates that mothers often left their children at home while they went to work in the fields or to do other work. "Babies taken to the fields may have had fewer accidents, but their presence interfered with work. For this reason, children were swaddled and often left in an antique cradle (or an antique crib) for a considerable portion of their early years. People of the time felt a swaddled baby in a crib / cradle was safe and could be left alone. When children were too old to be swaddled, they were tied to their antique cribs / cradle. This prevented them from crawling around the home and getting into mischief or endangering themselves. Mothers thought that this would prevent accidents, but cribs / cradle fires were the leading cause of death for infants. Siblings, even as young as two or three, were often left in charge of overseeing the infants while they were confined to their antique cribs.
